ith its theme of “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination”, the 2018 Met Gala was a star-studded event with celebrities turning up on the red carpet, adorned with jewels with all shapes and sizes. Most noticeable this year were the many pieces sporting gorgeous pearls in all shapes and sizes. Here are our top five picks of gorgeous celebrities who gave pearls the centre stage through their earrings, rings, necklaces and more!
This year’s most impressive outfit has to go to music queen, Rihanna. The star came dressed in a papal-inspired outfit made by Galliano, complete with a strapless dress dripping with pearls and matched with a floor-length robe. This was paired with a gorgeous Cartier crucifix originally designed in 1934 by Cartier London. The initial design featured gold and silver, diamonds, rubies, sapphires, button pearls, opal and topaz. After the piece was reintroduced in 1949, it included a Dove of the Holy Spirit made of gold, diamonds, sapphires, rubies, emeralds, moonstones, pearl and opal. Rihanna paired this stunning piece with Louboutin heels featuring pearl ankle straps.
American rapper Cardi B also made waves with a beaded floor-length gown that showed off the musician’s pregnant belly. Made by Moschino’s Creative Director, Jeremy Scott, the dress took four weeks to create. Cardi paired the elaborate gown with an impressive tri-point hat that was studded with pearls and rhinestones, and took three whole days to craft.
Founder and Creative Director of Eco Age, Livia Gioggioli sashayed down the red carpet with husband Colin Firth in an elegant high-necked gown in cream. She paired this with some eye-catching pieces from Bulgari, the most impressive of which was a necklace from Bulgari’s High Jewelry Collection worn as a bracelet. The glittering piece featured 68 pearls and chrysoprase beads set in white gold.
Attending her first Met Gala ever, Mexican actress and singer Eiza Gonzalez turned heads in a striking black and white ensemble designed by Atelier Prabal Gurung. What really drew our attention though, was her Tasaki Atelier choker made from white gold, featuring a sapphire and diamond accent and a single perfect South Sea pearl.height=”851″ />
Although she might have missed the memo regarding the Catholic theme, Chinese model and actress Ming Xi looked heavenly in her carnation-pink gown which featured a subtle trio of pearl buttons in the bank. Xi also chose an elegant pair of shoulder-brushing earrings made from white multi-strand pearls, paired with cuffwork and bracelets that sported a galaxy of gorgeous white pearls.
