During Volle’s long history of creating custom opal jewellery, we’ve honed our craft, using only the finest Australian opals to craft keepsakes that our clients will wear and treasure for decades to come.
Australia produces some of the finest opals in the world, from mines like Lightning Ridge in New South Wales. These stones are known for their exceptional play of colour, revealing several different shades as light moves across them. Every opal we use is sourced directly from Australian mines, and because each one is slightly different, choosing a stone is a truly personal experience.
Every piece of custom opal jewellery is made by hand in our Sydney workshop. Our team includes certified gemmologists who verify the authenticity of each opal before any jewellery work begins. Then, our jewellers set to work, applying their craft to ensure every detail is just right.
If you already know the type of stone, metal or setting you’re after, we can work directly to your brief. There’s no need to worry if you’re new to opal jewellery, either. We’ll walk you through your options, explain what works well together and help you craft something special that also suits your taste and budget.
Opals are a natural stone and respond well to regular, gentle wear. Like any fine gemstone, though, they benefit from basic care. Storing your opals separately so they won’t come into contact with other pieces and cleaning with a soft, damp cloth will ensure your custom jewellery continues to stun for years to come.
One of the first things we discuss in our consultations is how often you plan to wear the piece. This guides decisions on settings, metals and the way the stone is secured. It ensures we design every custom ring, pendant or pair of earrings to suit the way it will be worn.
You don’t need to arrive with a clear idea of your design. During your visit, we’ll show you a range of stones and explain the differences between them: how the play of colour varies, where stones are sourced, what suits different settings and so on. If you do have a strong preference, we’ll work with you to make sure the final design matches that vision.
While it might seem that way, it isn’t something we recommend. The main risk is incompatibility. Not every stone suits every setting, and not every jeweller has experience working with opals specifically. At Volle, the stone and setting are considered as one from the start of the process, meaning you’ll never have to worry about whether they’ll work with each other.
The cost of custom opal jewellery depends on the stone you choose, as well as the metal, setting and how complex your design is. Every commission is different, and we want to ensure your total satisfaction with the finished product. Contact us or visit our Sydney showroom for a tailored estimate.
Purchasing custom opal jewellery is a deeply personal process and, as such, is best done in person. Our Sydney showroom features a broad collection of opals, and seeing them in real life allows you to take in how they react to different lighting conditions or environments. This process offers a much more vivid sense of how the stone would work in a finished piece.
Timelines vary, depending once again on the complexity of the piece. Some can be completed relatively quickly, while those with intricate settings or multiple stones take longer. We’ll provide a realistic timeframe during your consultation and keep you updated throughout the process. If you have a specific completion date in mind, such as a birthday, anniversary or other special occasion, let us know early and we will do our best to accommodate it.
The best way to ensure you love the final piece is to be thorough in the design stage. We take the time at the beginning of each commission to understand exactly what you are after, and we welcome questions, discussion and input throughout. After all, it’s your piece. If you do have concerns once the piece is complete, speak with us directly and we will discuss what is possible. Custom jewellery is a very personal investment, and we always want you to be delighted with the finished piece.
